Have you heard of the Rozalia Project? Their mission is to protect the ocean and conserve a healthy, thriving marine ecosystem. Today, they are tackling the problem of marine debris through multiple angles including cleanups, education, technology, and solutions-based research. For the past four years, Surf Sweets has donated to the Rozalia Project through our 1% for the Planet partnership. In 2018, Surf Sweets partnered with Rozalia Project for their Expedition STEM for the Ocean season.
Surf Sweets is proud to report that thanks to our support, the Rozalia Project recovered 37,582 pieces of marine debris! During the Expedition STEM for the Ocean, 30 volunteer crews sailed over 700 nautical miles educating and cleaning up in the Gulf of Maine from Boston to Matinicus Island, to Rockland and Kittery. Many existing and new partner organizations hosted clean-ups in over 30 locations in the Gulf of Maine.
In partnership with Marine Mammals of Maine and NOAA, the expedition sailed to the Isle of Shoals to document gray seals and contribute to a growing catalog of entangled seals in the region. Additionally, this was the Rozalia Project’s fourth year of Zero hours on the generator on American Promise, their Oceanographic Research Vessel. Using only solar, wind and hydropower, American Promise generated all of their power needs throughout the expeditions.
Rozalia Project’s efforts inspired over 4,000 people through in-person outreach and education programs and reached over 40,000 new ocean stewards on social media!
Surf Sweets couldn’t be happier that we have helped impact the reduction of marine debris. Watch this video to see some of our adventures with Rozalia Project this expedition season:
