What does it mean that Wholesome! Organic Sugar is "green-cut?"

Green-cut refers to the fact that there is no burning of the fields taking place in the harvest of our Fairtrade Organic Sugar. Field burning is a common practice with conventional cane sugar harvesting. The burning is done to remove all the additional foliage and make the mechanical harvesting and subsequent cane crushing and sugar extraction more efficient. It eliminates the additional “plant trash” from the processing. Burning of cane fields is significantly detrimental to wildlife and the environment. Our Faitrade Organic Sugar Cane is almost exclusively hand-cut by the farmers. Additionally, they machete all of the foliage so it lies in the freshly harvested field acting as a natural barrier to weed growth. For more information on our sustainability practices click here.
