Fair Trade & The Environment


Did you know Fair Trade Certified products help protect the planet through rigorous environmental standards? These standards are just some of the many reasons that Wholesome has committed to Fair Trade and has pioneered Fair Trade standards since the brand’s inception. Protecting people and protecting the Earth through Fair Food is in our mission and drives us to do better each and every day.

In honor of Earth Day, here are the leading environmental standards Fair Trade has implemented with every farmer they work with (including Wholesome Farmers!):

Water Conservation

Water overuse is a large issue when it comes to growing sugar cane. Fair Trade standards ensure that farmers maintain their water distribution system to avoid wasting water. Farmers are also kept aware of technology and practices available to improve water efficiency throughout the growing process.

Protecting Biodiversity

Fair Trade standards ensure that all farmers are aware of rare, threatened, and endangered species in their region, and do not hunt or kill these species on their farms. Farmers also continuously evaluate opportunities for enhancing biodiversity on their property.


Deforestation or degradation of natural forests is not allowed in Fair Trade communities. Farmers are kept aware of protected areas in their region and ensure that buffer zones around these areas are maintained without crop cultivation, fertilizer application, pesticide application, or waste disposal.

Commitment to Non-GMO Crops

Crops that are Fair Trade Certified must adhere to a non-gmo standard whereby no seeds planted are genetically modified. This prevents the need for excessive chemical fertilizers and pesticides and maintains that all crops are pure and not modified in any form.

Integrated Pest Management

Fair Trade farmers are aware of Integrated Pest Management techniques are implementing some of these practices to minimize use of chemical pesticides.

Protection of Soil

Fair Trade standards limit use of chemical fertilizers by requiring farmers to monitor and track soil health and erosion. Replanting ground cover to rebuild soil fertility is promoted versus utilizing chemical fertilizers.

Safe Waste Disposal

All Fair Trade farmers and workers are trained in proper techniques of handling organic waste to ensure that it does not pose a threat to food safety, water, or soil quality. Wastewater is never discharged directly into the natural environment without prior treatment, and extensive measures are in place to ensure that discharged water does not pollute drinking sources.
