At Wholesome, we believe that FAIR FOOD CREATES STRONGER COMMUNITIES. But what does that mean, exactly?
To us, Fair Food is food that is produced in a way that puts people first – the farmers and workers – and ensures people are treated fairly and with respect. It also means that all people have access to good food, and that distribution of food is fair and equitable. When this happens, individuals are empowered, and when empowered individuals come together, stronger communities are formed.
Through our Fair Trade pioneering efforts, Wholesome has helped support international sugarcane farmers and beekeeping communities since our founding in 2001. We do this through Fair Trade premiums, which is money earned by farmers through the Fair Trade program. Communities democratically vote on how the funds should be used, and they are then allocated to purchase farming equipment, build infrastructure like schools and hospitals, and support access to basic needs like fresh drinking water through the building of wells. These funds help communities immensely and are core to Wholesome’s mission.
Here in the US, we’re expanding our Fair Food footprint and are looking to support organizations that are doing great work in their communities by providing food to those in need. As Wholesome is a company with roots in Houston, TX and an office in Boulder, CO, we’re inspired by these organizations in both of our hometowns, as they are shining examples of what Fair Food is all about.
Our mission is to enrich the lives of those in underserved areas through wellness education. Wellness matters because everything we do and every emotion we feel relates to our well-being. In turn, our well-being directly affects our actions and emotions. It’s an ongoing cycle.
The Wow Project is doing amazing work in the Alief Community outside of Houston, TX by installing Community Fridges that people can donate to and anyone can access. They’re next project includes building a food pantry out of old shipping containers!
Metro Caring’s mission is to work with our community to meet people’s immediate need for nutritious food, while also building a movement to address the root causes of hunger. Metro Caring sees our community of more than 75,000 Coloradans as a base from which to build an anti-hunger movement. Metro Caring offers innovative programming in Healthy Foods Access, Nutrition Education and Cooking Classes, ID Procurement, Urban Gardening and Agriculture, and Community Organizing and Activation.
Metro Caring has made a huge impact in the lives of many people in the metro-Denver Community and goes above and beyond just providing access to food – they also work to empower individuals through education, help people to get jobs and provide better lives for their families.
