Tips For Happy Trails

Family road trips can be fun for kids AND parents. All it takes is a little planning to stay ahead of the “I’m bored!” and “Are we there yet?” coming from the back seat. To help, we put together a list of road trip tips to keep things fun for everyone, starting with the most important — the snacks!

Snacks are great at keeping the peace, so pack treats the whole family can enjoy. We love this gluten-free, nut-free Road Trip Trail Mix recipe:

Combine handful of Surf Sweets Gummy Bears, allergy-free chocolate chips, pumpkin seeds and one Lundberg Brown Rice Cake (crumbled). Store in a portable plastic container or mason jar for on-the-go snacking!

Travel Bag Surprises give your kids something to look forward to for the duration of the trip. Simply place little gifts — like travel games or Mad Libs — in paper bags. Then, label each bag with a different city and tell the kids they can’t open their surprises until they reach their destination. They’ll love the added excitement and you’ll love the extra bargaining power.

Pillows are a must for any road trip. Just make sure they’re appropriately sized and made for travel to avoid those “Your pillow keeps touching me!” mishaps.

Car Seat Organizers allow kids to keep their favorite things handy so they stay happy. Better yet, you won’t have to keep turning around to get out their coloring books, stuffed animals or anything else their short attention spans desire.

Audiobooks are a great way to pass the time. Especially with so many options parents and kids can enjoy together, like Harry Potter, Harriet the Spy and Peter and the Starcatchers, to name a few.

Pools are fun no matter what age you are. If you have an overnight stay, be sure to choose a place with a pool. Your kids will be eternally grateful — for at least 5 minutes.

Good luck and have a great trip!
