Regenerative Organic Certified® 101

Since 2023, Wholesome has been a leader in bringing Regenerative Organic Certified® Sweeteners to consumers, helping to advance agricultural standards and support practices to build soil health at our partner farms.

What is Regenerative Organic Certification?

It’s a certification for food, textiles and personal care ingredients with 3 main pillars – Soil Health, Animal Welfare and Worker Fairness. It was founded by industry leaders like Dr. Bronner’s, Patagonia and the Rodale Institute.

Which Wholesome products are Regenerative Organic Certified®?

Some of our Cane Sugars, Turbinado Sugars and Agaves are Regenerative Organic Certified® under the Soil Health and Worker Fairness Pillars, and we are actively working to transition more of our products to this certification. Please check individual products for details!

What does it mean that some Wholesome products are Regenerative Organic Certified®?

Our Regenerative Organic Certified® sugars and agaves are sourced from farms using regenerative organic practices to help build soil health, sequester carbon and ensure the fair treatment of farm workers. These practices can differ farm to farm but often include low to no tilling, composting, crop rotations, and cover cropping. For workers, these farms must have an existing social fairness certification, and they must also follow a series of worker safety and fairness requirements around equal pay, protection against retaliation, health and safety and more.

These sugars and agaves also have the same quality standards you’ve come to expect from Wholesome – they are Fair Trade Certified™, USDA Organic, Non-GMO Project Verified, Gluten Free and Naturally Vegan.

Why is soil health so important?

Scientists and farmers alike have been advocating for the importance of healthy soil - healthy soil can hold more water, is more resistant to erosion, contains more nutrients and minerals to feed plants, and contains more bacteria and fungi to fight diseases and pests. And if our top soil keeps degrading, that will reduce the amount of farmable land, impacting our overall food system.

At Wholesome, we are committed to creating positive, meaningful change and that includes change for our planet! We are proud to offer you and your family more and moresweeteners that are Regenerative Organic Certified®.
